Abstract

The construction of a dam in a river shall reduce the sediment flow into downstream face of dam structure, so that many problems such as river bed degradation, or destruction of the river environment shall be encountered in this part of river.  Additionally, sedimentation shall also occur in the reservoir which likewise may decrease the reservoir storage capacity.  Related with these problems, a technology is to be introduced to drain sediment from the reservoir to downstream part of the dam.  The conceptual technology of flowing sediment from the reservoir into downstream part of the dam and thus reducing sediment in the reservoir, introduces the design of a sediment suction pipe.  In this context, Pusair researchers had studied the influence of the suction pipe design on the sediment flow by carrying out a physical model test at the Hydraulic Laboratory of the Research Center for Water Resources.  The designed sediment suction pipe the so called suction pipe technology consists of 4 types.    Results of the flow test show that the sediment suction pipe technology Type 4 can carry coarse sand material into the river downstream the dam more effectively than other types.
